Thyroid Conditions We Treat

Thyroid conditions can present in various forms, and our specialists manage a wide range of related disorders.

  • Hyperthyroidism

A condition where the thyroid gland becomes overactive and produces excessive thyroid hormones, disrupting the body’s metabolic balance. Assessment for Hyperthyroidism can help guide diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing monitoring.

  • Hypothyroidism

A condition where the thyroid gland becomes underactive and produces insufficient thyroid hormones, which can slow down bodily functions. Assessment for Hypothyroidism can help guide proper treatment.

  • Thyroid Nodules

Abnormal growths or lumps that form within the thyroid gland, which may be solid or fluid-filled. Assessment for Thyroid Nodules can help determine whether monitoring or further tests are needed.

  • Thyroid Cancer

Malignant growth in the thyroid tissue requiring specialist care, with various types including papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid cancers. Assessment for Thyroid Cancer can help guide diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing care.

Common Thyroid Disorder Symptoms

Thyroid disorders present with various symptoms depending on whether the gland is overactive, underactive, or structurally abnormal, which is why consulting a thyroid specialist in Singapore is often recommended for proper diagnosis and care.

  • Unexplained Weight Changes

Weight loss may indicate hyperthyroidism, while weight gain despite unchanged diet and exercise habits may suggest hypothyroidism.

  • Energy Level Fluctuations

Excessive fatigue and weakness are common in hypothyroidism, while restlessness and difficulty sleeping often occur in hyperthyroidism.

  • Temperature Sensitivity

Increased sensitivity to cold temperatures in hypothyroidism or heat intolerance and excessive sweating in hyperthyroidism.

  • Neck Discomfort or Swelling

Visible enlargement (goitre) or nodules in the neck area, sometimes accompanied by difficulty swallowing or breathing.

  • Heart Rate Changes

Elevated heart rate or palpitations in hyperthyroidism, or slower heart rate in hypothyroidism.

  • Mood and Cognitive Changes

Anxiety, irritability, or nervousness in hyperthyroidism, or depression and cognitive slowing in hypothyroidism.

  • Menstrual Irregularities

Changes in menstrual patterns and potential fertility issues in women with thyroid dysfunction.

When to See a Thyroid Specialist in Singapore

A family doctor or primary care doctor may be the first point of care for general symptoms or screening blood tests. A thyroid specialist may be helpful when symptoms persist, test results are unclear, medication needs close adjustment, a thyroid nodule needs assessment, or thyroid disease occurs during pregnancy or alongside other endocrine conditions.

Consider seeing a thyroid specialist if you have:

  • Unexplained weight loss or weight gain
  • Persistent fatigue, weakness, low energy, or brain fog
  • Palpitations, fast heart rate, tremors, anxiety, or heat intolerance
  • Cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin, hair thinning, or slowed heart rate
  • A visible neck swelling, thyroid lump, or sensation of pressure in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing that may be linked to thyroid enlargement
  • Irregular menstrual cycles, fertility concerns, or thyroid concerns during pregnancy
  • Abnormal TSH, free T4, free T3, or thyroid antibody results
  • A thyroid nodule found during ultrasound, CT, MRI, health screening, or another scan
  • A previous diagnosis of Graves’ disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, thyroiditis, or thyroid cancer requiring follow-up

The right timing depends on your symptoms, medical history, pregnancy status, test results, and whether there are signs of a thyroid lump or goitre. If you are unsure what your thyroid results mean, a specialist consultation can help clarify the next step.

Diagnostic Methods

Physical Examination: Thorough assessment of the neck area to check for enlargement, nodules, or tenderness in the thyroid gland. The examination also includes checking for signs of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, such as skin changes, reflexes, and heart rate.

Blood Tests: We offer a variety of comprehensive thyroid function tests measuring levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free T4, free T3, and thyroid antibodies, reverse T3 and thyroglobulin. These tests help determine whether the thyroid is functioning properly and can identify autoimmune thyroid conditions.

Thyroid Ultrasound: Non-invasive imaging technique that provides detailed visualisation of the thyroid gland’s structure. Ultrasound helps detect nodules, cysts, or other abnormalities and guides further diagnostic procedures.

Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy: A procedure where a thin needle is used to extract cells from suspicious thyroid nodules for microscopic examination. This test helps distinguish between benign and potentially malignant nodules.

Thyroid Scan (Radioactive Iodine Uptake Test): Specialised imaging that measures how much iodine the thyroid collects from the bloodstream. This test helps determine whether nodules are functioning normally or are “hot” (overactive) or “cold” (underactive).

Treatment Options

Management of thyroid disorders requires a personalised approach based on the specific condition, its severity, and individual patient factors such as age, overall health, and pregnancy status.

Medication Therapy

Prescription of anti-thyroid drugs like methimazole or propylthiouracil to reduce excessive hormone production in hyperthyroidism. For hypothyroidism, synthetic thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine) helps restore normal hormone levels. Medication dosage requires regular monitoring and adjustment to maintain optimal thyroid function.

Radioactive Iodine Therapy

Oral administration of radioactive iodine to reduce thyroid activity in hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland absorbs the radioactive iodine, which gradually destroys overactive thyroid cells without affecting other body tissues.

Monitoring

Regular monitoring of thyroid nodules that appear benign through periodic ultrasounds and blood tests. This approach is suitable for small, asymptomatic nodules with low-risk characteristics and involves follow-up examinations at regular intervals to track any changes.

Thyroid Hormone Suppression Therapy

Administration of thyroid hormone medication to suppress TSH production in patients with thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer. This therapy helps prevent growth or recurrence of nodules and is monitored through regular blood tests to maintain appropriate hormone levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a thyroid specialist do in Singapore?

A thyroid specialist assesses and manages thyroid conditions such as abnormal thyroid hormone levels, thyroid nodules, autoimmune thyroid disorders, and thyroid cancer-related follow-up. In Singapore, thyroid care may involve an endocrinologist, ENT surgeon, or thyroid surgeon, depending on the condition. An endocrinologist focuses on hormone testing, medication, monitoring, thyroid function interpretation, and endocrine follow-up.

When should I see a thyroid specialist instead of a GP?

You may consider seeing a thyroid specialist if your thyroid blood tests remain abnormal, symptoms persist, medication needs closer adjustment, or thyroid concerns occur during pregnancy or while planning pregnancy. Specialist care may also be helpful for thyroid nodules, goitre, Graves’ disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, thyroiditis, or thyroid cancer follow-up.

What is the difference between hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. It may cause weight loss, palpitations, hand tremors, heat intolerance, anxiety, or increased sweating.

Hypothyroidism means the thyroid gland produces too little thyroid hormone. It may cause fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin, low mood, or slower body functions.

Can thyroid disorders cause weight gain or weight loss?

Yes. Hypothyroidism may contribute to weight gain or difficulty losing weight because the body’s metabolism can slow down.

Hyperthyroidism may cause weight loss because thyroid hormone levels are too high. However, weight changes can also have other causes, so assessment usually includes symptoms, blood tests, medication history, and overall health.

What causes thyroid disorders?

Thyroid disorders can result from autoimmune conditions, iodine deficiency or excess, genetic factors, certain medications, radiation exposure, and occasionally thyroid tumours.

Environmental factors may also contribute to thyroid dysfunction in genetically susceptible individuals, which is why consulting a Thyroid Specialist in Singapore can help ensure timely diagnosis and personalised care.

Can thyroid conditions be cured completely?

Some thyroid conditions, like temporary thyroiditis, may resolve without long-term effects. However, many thyroid disorders, such as autoimmune conditions, typically require lifelong management rather than providing a complete cure.

How often should thyroid function be monitored once treatment begins?

Initially, thyroid function tests may be needed every 4-8 weeks until stable levels are achieved. Once stabilised, testing typically occurs every 6-12 months, with more frequent monitoring during pregnancy or when medication changes occur.

How much does a thyroid specialist consultation cost in Singapore?

Consultation fees can vary depending on the clinic, doctor, appointment type, tests required, insurance coverage, and whether additional investigations such as thyroid ultrasound or fine needle aspiration are needed. Patients may contact Arden Endocrinology Specialist Clinic for current consultation fees and appointment details.

Is thyroid treatment covered by MediSave in Singapore?

MediSave coverage depends on the type of thyroid care, patient eligibility, approved claim limits, current national scheme rules, and whether the consultation, test, scan, or treatment falls under a claimable category. Patients should check with the clinic, insurer, or relevant national healthcare scheme before their appointment.
